Fourth Friday Gallery Crawl

Monica, Andre and I checked out the Fourth Friday Gallery crawl in downtown Wilmington last night. Overall the galleries are sort of underwhelming, but the Bottega Gallery was my favorite by far. The show was set up to highlight work by UNCW art professors and selected students that they mentor. It was interesting to see how the teacher's work influenced (or didn't really influence) that of the student's. It was also a cute, funky little space. Very Austin vibe.

Many of the other galleries had too much beachy / cutesy type art. Not my thing.

We also ate at Circa 1922. Yummy food. Great Vino Verde.

Former Texas governor Ann Richards dies

Very sad news today.



AUSTIN - Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, the witty and flamboyant Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity, died Wednesday night at her home in Austin surrounded by her family after a battle with cancer, a family spokeswoman said. She was 73.

Richards's keynote address to the 1988 Democratic National Convention put her in the national spotlight when she uttered the famous line, about the wealthy, then-Vice President George H. W. Bush, "Poor George, he can't help it...He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." The speech set the tone for her political future; she was a real Texan who established herself as a candidate who appealed to suburban voters as well as to the traditional Democratic base that included African-Americans and Hispanics.

Flex Fest 06

Good news tonight. Just found out that my thesis film "29 Places I Once Called Home" has been selected for inclusion in FLEX '06, the Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival, taking place in Gainesville, Florida from November 2-5. This is very exciting for me since Roger Beebe (an amazing experimental filmmaker and scholar) runs the fest. Not to mention Craig Baldwin (Other Cinema) and Andrea Grover (Aurora Picture Show) are jurors. Whoohoo! So very excited.

Also, its a festival that tours. Always a bonus.

Anyway, going to sleep amazingly happy tonight. Hope you are too.

Stick Me With The Pin Please

Starting back to accupuncture tomorrow. I feel very positive about the fact that the woman I'm seeing here in Wilmington graduated from the Academy of Oriental Medicine in Austin (http://www.aoma.edu/). Matt, a friend of ours who we trust immensely also graduated from there. He firmly believed in acupuncture's ability to help with hormone balance and fertility. So we'll see. I know that even western OBGYNs (mine in Iowa City included) now recommend acupuncture. So we thought we'de give it a try. Wish us luck!

Our Life is Your Vacation

I think that's how the Wilmington saying goes...but we're new...so forgive me if the quote is slightly off. No matter though, cause the sentiment is there. People vacation where we live. How cool is that?



I'm not rubbing it in, I'm saying it more in amazement. Yesterday we drove out to the beach and did what I guess is body surfing for about two hours. Afterwards we were exhausted but ridiculously giddy. So much so that we went and got a boogie board. Next Sunday we're taking a picnic lunch and not coming home till the sun goes down!
